How often do students in class ask ‘Why do we have to do this?’ and become less engaged with their learning?

As a teacher, connecting the content being taught to the world of work can help shift students’ mindsets and increase their engagement. While teachers are not expected to be experts in career development – the key person with that expertise is the school’s career practitioner – they can play a pivotal role in supporting the career development of students and help prepare them for the future.

In a paper written by Tristram Hooley, Professor of Career Education, Career education: Every teacher had a role, he says ‘all teachers are career teachers’. Integrating career learning in the curriculum can help teachers to:

  • Increase interest in their subject
  • Show what they are teaching has a real use in the world
  • Motivate students by helping them see how their learning links to their future
  • Make learning more relevant to students.
