Schools need tools that are rigorous, meaningful and actionable. Just as importantly, they need to amplify the voices of students, staff, parents and leaders so improvement is grounded in lived experience as well as outcomes. Contemporary approaches to school effectiveness are therefore shifting from measuring performance alone to understanding the conditions that enable every member of a school community to thrive.

Independent Schools Victoria’s isLEAD School Effectiveness Surveys are designed specifically for Independent schools, providing evidence-based insights into the experiences of students, staff, parents and school leaders. By combining stakeholder feedback with robust benchmarking, isLEAD helps schools better understand their performance, identify opportunities for growth and make informed strategic decisions.

Built around the continuous improvement cycle of Listen, Evaluate, Act and Deliver, isLEAD School Effectiveness Surveys has provided a trusted framework for stakeholder perception data. As schools navigate rapid social, technological and educational change, ISV has undertaken the most comprehensive review and redevelopment of isLEAD in its history. For over 15 years, isLEAD has supported Independent Schools Victoria’s Member schools to understand and improve the experiences of their communities.

Over the past 18 months, ISV’s research team has led an extensive academic validation program in partnership with researchers from the University of Melbourne and the University of Cambridge. This work draws on international research, national frameworks and emerging evidence on student learning, wellbeing and success.

Importantly, isLEAD has been designed in close consultation with Member schools. Principals, leaders, staff, students and parents contributed to shaping both content and structure, ensuring the surveys reflect the realities of contemporary school life and support practical decision-making.

The result is a refreshed isLEAD suite, including new Early Learning Centre educator and parent surveys, updated and streamlined core surveys, and optional premium modules that allow schools to explore areas of strategic interest in greater depth while maintaining longitudinal benchmarking. Surveys now use contemporary language, improved design and a stronger focus on clarity and usability.

The redevelopment reflects ISV’s broader commitment to strengthening research, evidence and innovation across the sector. ISV has invested in building a dedicated research and evaluation capability, expanding partnerships with leading universities and ensuring member schools have access to robust, practical and contemporary evidence to inform improvement.

While achievement data shows what is happening, perception data helps explain why. The voices of school communities provide essential insight into culture, relationships, engagement and wellbeing that cannot be captured through academic measures alone.

The redevelopment also strengthens the technical integrity of the tool. Advanced psychometric analysis, pilot testing and validation processes ensure isLEAD measures are reliable, valid and fit for purpose, giving schools confidence in the quality of their data.

The new isLEAD suite reflects ISV’s commitment to evidence-informed improvement, stakeholder voice and continuous learning. It provides schools with deeper insight, stronger benchmarking and greater flexibility to support strategic priorities while maintaining the integrity of a long-standing longitudinal dataset.
