The Impact of Victorian Schools

Report reveals the significant economic and social contribution of Victoria’s Independent schools.

Independent schools contribute $6.6 billion to Victoria’s economy, report finds

A new independent report commissioned by Independent Schools Victoria (ISV) reveals the significant economic and social contribution of Victoria’s Independent schools.

The report shows that the sector contributes $6.6 billion to the state economy each year, driven by direct employment, infrastructure investment, international student activity and community programs. Victoria’s Independent schools employ more than 26,000 full-time staff, three times the workforce of the entire AFL industry, and educate over 165,000 students, with enrolments growing at three times the rate of other sectors.

Independent schools also deliver substantial savings to government, estimated at $3 billion annually, by educating students who would otherwise require places in government schools.

The report highlights the sector’s essential role in supporting students, families, local communities and the broader economy, while also drawing attention to the financial pressures created by payroll tax and rising costs.

This report provides impartial, evidence-based insight into the scale and significance of Victoria’s Independent school sector.
