ISV welcomes opposition support for Independent schools

Independent Schools Victoria (ISV) today welcomed the Victorian Opposition’s announcement of support to upgrade and build new non-government schools.

‘This announcement acknowledges the key role Independent schools play as a central pillar
of our education system,’ ISV Chief Executive Michelle Green said.

‘It’s a recognition that Independent schools help meet the needs of a growing population and
provide choice for parents seeking schools that best meet the needs of their children.

‘Following a similar announcement by the Victorian Government this week, it confirms the
willingness of both sides of politics to work closely with Independent schools in the interests
of students.’

Ms Green said capital works funding provided to non-government schools helped them cope
with growing demands for new and improved schools, particularly in areas of rapid population
growth.

She also welcomed the announcement that a Liberal Nationals Government would
transfer planning responsibility for applications for new non-government schools away from
local councils to the Minister for Planning.

‘We hope this will simplify planning processes, which can impede efforts to build new
Independent schools and expand existing ones – impediments that government schools don’t
face.’
