Growing with purpose: Why demand is rising at Heathdale Christian College
3 min read
As Melbourne’s western corridor experiences rapid growth, schools are navigating rising enrolments alongside the need to preserve culture and quality. In this Perspectives blog, Ross Grace, Executive Principal of Heathdale Christian College, shares how a deliberate, values-driven approach to growth is shaping demand across Heathdale Christian College’s Melton and Werribee campuses.
Heathdale Christian College’s primary school in Melton is full for the first time since opening. What’s driving this demand?
There are two key factors driving this demand at Heathdale. The first is the significant population growth across Melbourne’s western corridor. Melton has now overtaken Werribee as the fastest‑growing local government area in Australia, which naturally means there are many more young families living in the region.
But population growth alone does not fill a school. What we are seeing is families actively sharing their experience of Heathdale with other families. Parents are recommending the College because of the alignment with their values and the confidence they have in the education their children are receiving.
It is this combination of population growth, educational reputation and strong word‑of‑mouth that is creating sustained enrolment demand.
Importantly, we are also an explicitly Christian school. Families who are seeking strong Christian foundations and clearly articulated family values are intentionally seeking us out, and that alignment is a meaningful part of this growth.
You mentioned you could have filled many more places. Why take a measured approach instead?
The Board and I have deliberately chosen to take a measured approach to growth because we are deeply committed to preserving and strengthening the educational product and culture of the College. That commitment means growth has to serve the mission of the school, not dilute it. Rather than simply flinging the doors open, we want families to clearly understand the kind of school Heathdale is and what it means to be part of this community.
For some families, that alignment is very strong. For others, they may discern that a different setting is a better fit. That clarity is important for everyone involved. Our focus has been on continuing to enhance our reputation and cultural foundations in a way that is sustainable and intentional.
Central to this is our understanding of education as a partnership. Our mission is to partner with families in the raising and formation of their children. This is not a transactional relationship where families pay fees and receive a service, but a shared commitment to the formation, growth and wellbeing of their children.
Our enrolment process reflects that shared commitment, helping both families and the College enter the relationship with clear expectations and shared purpose. Measured growth allows us to honour that partnership well, without compromising what makes the College distinctive.
How is enrolment tracking across Heathdale’s Werribee campus?
Enrolments at Werribee are tracking extremely well. We have experienced significant growth across both campuses, and as with Melton, we are continuing with a measured, streamed growth strategy. This allows us to respond to demand while remaining faithful to our educational and cultural priorities. The reputation the College has built over time continues to play an important role in that growth, supported by the experiences families are having within the community.
Do you expect this growth to continue long term?
Our research indicates that we will be able to sustain the growth we have experienced at the Werribee campus over the long term. We also see opportunities to expand at Melton, which the Board continues to explore carefully.
One of the guiding principles we have established together is that growth must always be intentional. This allows us to plan not only for academic provision, but for community, culture and the overall experience of students and staff, ensuring learning environments and structures support students to flourish as whole people.
Expansion, when done well, is thoughtful and strategic, ensuring educational quality, culture and community wellbeing are never compromised.
What role do moderate fee Independent schools play in these communities?
Moderate‑fee Independent schools play a significant role because they provide families with meaningful choice. In this region, there is a wide spectrum of schooling options – from low‑fee to very high‑fee schools. The Board’s intentional decision to remain a moderate‑fee‑paying College reflects a desire to provide families choice and access to faith-based education, while never compromising the quality or integrity of the educational offering.
Schools like Heathdale provide exceptional value, particularly given the breadth of pathways and subject offerings available to students. Equally important is choice around faith and values. Families want to know that the school educating their children aligns with their beliefs and priorities.
As a Christian school, we see the profound impact that faith‑based education can have on families. Many parents we speak with experienced schools like Heathdale themselves growing up and had positive educational experiences. In turn, they desire a faith-filled educational experience for their children today.
