Music and the voice are pivotal in the course of human evolution and development. Since its emergence, vocal expression has created social bonds between groups across all human cultures. Understanding how we can connect to ourselves and others through our voice leads to greater self-knowledge and mental health benefits, whilst also providing opportunities for a whole heap of fun, (as you can see in the video below)!
This workshop is led by professional operatic tenor and choral veteran, Chris Elliott, who will be accompanied by a classical pianist.
Many of you may remember Chris from his workshops at the Arts Learning Festival in May. Chris first came to Melbourne in 2016, when Independent Schools Victoria brought to schools the Art of Listening to the Melbourne Recital Centre from the Edinburgh International Festival.
Chris leads students through a transformative experience, guiding them along a journey of self-discovery, allowing them to find their own voice or to find a different voice within themselves. They are encouraged to express themselves in new and exciting ways, with the aim of promoting wellbeing, and equipping them with skills and knowledge to continue that wellbeing journey into the rest of their lives.
Whilst this is a workshop that uses music, it is not a music workshop as such, and although students will have the opportunity to experience the power of live, up-close performance in a way they may well not have experienced before, this is a workshop for all students, not just those with a particular musical focus.
Through The Inner Voice, students gain a greater understanding of how we express ourselves vocally, including the mechanics of how we produce and use our voices and how our voices can be our guide, all underpinned by an atmosphere of discovery, fun, surprise and laughter. Part of this overall musical journey will include mindfulness techniques.
